Cozy California Temecula lies between L.A. and San Diego, but it's worlds apart It's hard to visit Southern California and not want to hang out on the coast, but when the traffic gets too heavy and the smog gets too thick, there's a respite about an hour from either San Diego or Los Angeles that's worth a quick getaway. From the sprawling horse ranches to the boutique wineries, everything about Temecula has a sleepy, Old West feel - golf included. If you want scenery and solitude, the CrossCreek Golf Club ($105 with a cart on weekends, crosscreekgolfclub.com) is the best of the area's courses, having received ««««½ stars in Golf Digest's Best Places to Play guide. The Arthur Hills-designed course, opened in 2001, is only 6,832 yards from the back tees (par 71), but don't let that fool you. Its routing across creeks, up and down hills and around huge oak trees helps give it a solid 140 Slope Rating from the tips. R.K. Article reprinted from Golf Digest, December 6, 2006 |
